Department of Education
The Department of Education (ED) is a cabinet-level department of the Skygeneration.ca United States government that is responsible for overseeing public education. ED was created in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter, and its mission is to “promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by focusing on four overarching goals: ensuring equal access to education and opportunity for all students, improving the quality of education, expanding educational opportunities for all learners, and promoting innovation in education.“
ED’s work is divided into four main areas:
- Early childhood education: ED works to ensure that all children have access to high-quality early childhood education programs.
- K-12 education: ED provides funding and support to states and local school districts to help them improve student achievement.
- Higher education: ED provides funding and support to colleges and universities to help them make college more affordable and accessible to all students.
- Career and technical education: ED provides funding and support to career and technical education programs to help students develop the skills they need to succeed in the workforce.
ED also administers a number of important federal education programs, including:
- Title I: Title I provides funding to schools with high concentrations of low-income students to help them improve student achievement.
- No Child Left Behind: No Child Left Behind is a law that requires states to set high standards for student achievement and to hold schools accountable for meeting those standards.
- Race to the Top: Race to the Top is a competitive grant program that encourages states to adopt innovative education reforms.
- College Access and Opportunity Act: The College Access and Opportunity Act provides funding to help students from low-income families afford college.
ED also plays a role in international education. ED works to promote educational exchange between the United States and other countries and to support the development of education systems in other countries.
